About the Role

INN is seeking a full-time Communications & Marketing Associate to help promote the growing field of nonprofit news to a range of audiences including INN members and prospective members, peer organizations and other journalists, and the broader community of philanthropists and civic leaders who see news as essential to democracy.

The Communications & Marketing Associate reports to the Communications Director and collaborates with virtually all teams at INN to develop communications strategies and multimedia content that drive engagement with INN programs, events and expertise. Chief responsibilities include: content production and management, email marketing, maintenance of INN’s websites, social media strategy, and management of visual assets.

Responsibilities are listed below.

Content marketing:

  • Writing and editing blog posts, announcements and blurbs to build awareness of INN’s mission and impact.
  • Creating marketing copy, in partnership with program leads, to drive participation in programs and events through invitations, emails and web pages.
  • Producing weekly email newsletters that are authoritative and lively, featuring outstanding member stories and resources for the journalism sector.
  • Managing our INNsights publication, including coordinating with outside writers, selecting quotes and images and categorizing stories into topics.
  • Building monthly metrics reporting to track content engagement and pull actionable insights.
  • Building emails – including layout/design, graphic creation and photo sourcing – for promotion of events, research, INN programs and services, and more.
  • Growing INN’s email marketing efforts by implementing best practices including A/B testing, keeping subscriber lists up-to-date, evaluating performance and leveraging segments for audiences including funders, academics and peer organizations.

Maintenance of INN websites:

  • Managing a quarterly process to review content on inn.org with program leads and staff to ensure that web pages are up-to-date.
  • Editing content on inn.org, findyournews.org and newsmatch.org and working with developers to make design updates – including adding new templates over time.
  • Troubleshooting technical issues and escalating for development support as needed.
  • Setting up and tracking website engagement via Google Analytics and integrating data from any other ad campaigns.
  • Ensuring that all INN events are presented in the online Events calendar and in the newsletters on a timely basis.

Social media strategy:

  • Coordinating INN’s social media efforts to position INN as the key voice in nonprofit news across X (Twitter), LinkedIn and Facebook.
  • Staying up-to-date on current social media trends and technologies (through meetings with industry peers, trainings, etc.) and leading INN to new platforms when appropriate.
  • Setting goals for increasing engagement and reach based on monthly analytics and latest industry trends.
  • Advising staff on best practices for social media engagement.

Design and management of visual assets:

  • Crafting simple graphics and appealing presentations to engage a variety of audiences.
  • Managing INN’s visual asset management tool, Air.
  • Collecting and organizing photographs – including photos from member newsrooms – and brand identity materials such as PowerPoints, logos and custom graphics.

Qualifications

INN is looking for someone passionate about working in or supporting non-profit organizations to join our team. Success in the role of Communications & Marketing Associate requires a mix of hard skills – crafting accurate copy, solving technical problems and meeting deadlines – and soft skills – collaborating with and taking direction from multiple staff, often on competing timelines.

The following skills and experience would make a candidate an especially great fit (if this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you even if you don’t tick every box on this list):

  • Excellent written communication skills with a mastery of grammar and AP style
  • 3-5 years of experience working in the journalism sector or in a communications/marketing role
  • Facility with common information technology and graphic design platforms, including WordPress, Constant Contact, Google Suite, PowerPoint, Canva and Adobe Studio.
  • Good design sensibility
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Preference given to candidates who are based in Eastern or Central time zones

About the team

The Communications & Marketing Associate reports to the Communications Director and serves as a liaison with freelancers who are brought on to provide editorial, graphic design and web development support. This role works particularly closely with INN staff in Membership, Research and Development (fundraising) and supports signature programs like INN Days, the Nonprofit News Awards and NewsMatch.

Benefits and Compensation

INN is a fully remote and distributed workplace, and this role will be a remote position. Candidates must be based in the United States. The salary range for this position is $50,000 – $60,000, based on experience, education, and potential. INN provides employer-sponsored benefits including medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans, short term disability insurance and a generous parental leave policy. This role will be expected to travel at least once a year for a staff retreat.
