Advisory Board Application

Join the NISM/OMCP Industry Advisory Board

As the social media and digital marketing industry evolves, the National Institute for Social Media (NISM) and our sister organization, Online Marketing Certified Professionals (OMCP), are seeking seasoned leaders and strategic thinkers to help shape the future. Our Industry Advisory Board brings together practitioners with deep expertise, not just in social media, but across modern digital marketing disciplines, to influence industry standards, strengthen professional certification, and drive meaningful progress within our communities.

Why join?

  • Make an impact. As a member, you’ll help guide NISM and OMCP’s strategic direction: recommending curriculum updates, helping shape exam content, and informing certification standards that thousands of professionals rely on
  • Lend your voice. You’ll serve as a respected industry advisor, a sounding board for emerging trends, and help ensure our certifications remain relevant and rigorous.
  • Champion professional excellence. Help set the bar for what it means to be a social media and digital marketing professional: from best practices and ethics to long‑term career viability.
  • Collaborate with peers. Work alongside other senior professionals, share insights, and contribute to a collective vision for the industry.
  • Give back to the community. Help shape the next generation of certified professionals, while reinforcing your own expertise and thought leadership.

Who we’re looking for:

Professionals with at least 3-5 years of hands‑on experience (agency or in‑house), with a focus on one or more of the following domains:

  • Social Media Strategy, Community Management & Project Management
  • Content Strategy & Distribution
  • Digital Advertising (PPC / Paid Social)
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Digital Analytics & Measurement
  • Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) / Growth Marketing
  • Email Marketing & Automation
  • Mobile & App Marketing
  • Research, Data‑Driven Strategy, and Industry Trends Analysis
  • Digital Ethics and Compliance

We welcome individuals who bring strategic vision, not just tactical skills, and who care deeply about advancing our profession as a whole.

What you’ll contribute (and expect):

  • Take the opportunity to sit for the SMS exam (at no cost), whether or not you intend to “earn the badge,” we ask that all board members experience the exam so they understand its structure and rigour.
  • Participate in periodic board meetings (Executive Board meets monthly; full Board meets roughly every other month). Video participation is available for all.
  • Provide strategic input and feedback on industry shifts, exam content, and the future direction of our certification bodies.
  • Contribute to at least two thought‑leadership blog posts (one per year): write about trends, challenges, or insights from your area of expertise.
  • Help expand and uplift the NISM/OMCP community: share resources, engage when relevant, and act as ambassadors for the value and integrity of certification.
  • Support periodic review and enhancement of exam content (e.g., propose new questions, review existing ones) to keep the certification exams aligned with current industry standards.
  • Offer guidance when needed for special cases (e.g., exam retest petitions, content domain disputes), ensuring fairness, consistency, and credibility.

Term & Timeline:
Board terms run two years, beginning January 1. We accept applications on a rolling basis, with interviews commencing each fall for the next intake. The time commitment is approximately 3-5 hours per month.

Thank you for considering this opportunity not only to lend your expertise but also to help shape the future of professional social media and digital marketing.

Applications will be reviewed and a follow up interview will be conducted before selections are made. Thank you for considering the NISM board!
